Thanks. I installed the kernel from the download image available from http://openelec.tv/get-openelec which is version 6.0.3 although it doesn't explicitly state EGL. Is EGL not included by default then?

I don't think so, because frisch had done it at the past and stopped working on it (at 6.0.0) because since then he is active at the 17
    http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=231955 & http://fritsch.fruehberger.net/openelec/v17_videoplayer_testing/
As you can read at http://fritsch.fruehberger.net/openelec/v15_2_EGL/ReadMe.txt the newer versions (e.g. 6.0.3) will be provided by MattDevo… so for me it sounds that EGL isn’t implemented at the “standard” version…

It was a little bit difficult to find the download-link for the MattDevo version :)
You have to analyses his script https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MattDevo/scripts/master/functions.sh which you will find at http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=194362
In the end you only need to the change the number from the kodi-forum at the end of the file-name or “.tar” instead of ".img.gz" if you want to get the update…
