Beta 9-2 FW fails to direct audio only to the earphones when earphones are plugged in

With beta 9-2 FW when earphones are plugged into the earphone jack audio is directed to both the earphones and the HDMI port. When earphones are plugged into the earphone jack audio should only be directed to the earphones and not to the HDMI port.

HDMI audio is supposed to be cut off when the headphones are connected.

Be that is it may. Do you know if MINIX acknowledges that "on beta 9.2 HDMI audio is never cut off when the headphones are connected" and that it is a firmware bug? I contacted MINIX Hong Kong support (John Scutt) about it and he replied:

"I have spent the last 15 minutes with our Product Manager to verify that the headphone jack works on Beta 9-2 FW.

On our side we are unable to replicate your issue, the headphone jack (with earphones plugged in) works as expected on Beta 9-2FW.

    What we tested:

    - NEO X8-H already turned on, then plug in earphones – sound is automatically diverted to the earphones.
    - NEO X8-H turned off and earphones plugged in – after system boots up, sound automatically plays from the earphones.
    - Earphones plugged in, then reboot the system – after system reboots, sound automatically plays from the earphones.

There should be absolutely no issue with the headphone jack with Beta 9-2FW, and no other user has mentioned any problem with the headphone jack on Beta 9-2FW. "

His analysis of the problem I reported was:

"Therefore, I suspect something may have gone wrong when you flashed Beta 9-2FW, otherwise it is peculiar that it would suddenly stop working after installing the firmware.

I would advise you to re-flash the firmware once more.
    "

Yes, "it is peculiar that it would suddenly stop working after installing the (Beta 9-2) firmware."

I think MINIX Hong Kong is in denial about this problem. MINIX US support was able to duplicate the problem with 9-2 FW, but they emphasized to me that 9-2 FW is beta so it is understandable that this doesn't work as expected. Is it usual and customary for companies to release products with beta software? Or if they do, then shouldn't they make it clear to the customer that they are buying a product with beta software? I don't see that specified anywhere on the MINIX X8-H product page (http://www.minix.com.hk/Products/MINIX-NEO-X8-H.html).

It doesn't make any difference if the X8 has beta or released firmware - a bug is a bug. It should be acknowledged and a commitment to fix it should be made. If it is a significant bug that prevents the use of the product as intended, then a "hot fix" should be made available for it outside of the normal firmware release schedule. This problem prevents me from using the X8 as intended - privately so as not to disturb others in the area. Isn't that why an earphone jack is available on the X8-H hardware?

I can reproduce this bug any number of times on beta 9.2. Digital and Analog audio outputs are active all the time on my X8-H. I have even tested it after re-flashing beta 9.2. If no other user can reproduce this, I have to assume that my X8-H is defective.

To comment on what @MINIX - John stated. It is not that there is no audio from the headphone jack. The problem is there is simultaneous digital and analog audio output.

Tested on beta9 firmware and same thing, audio to both hdmi and earphones. I have never noticed this before on any minix devices I've never used the earphone jack, only bluetooth headphones.

As a workaround can't you mute your tv?

Well.. it is good to know that there is at least another person who can reproduce the issue :) I personally don't use the headphones. @MrReis revived an old post of mine and that is when I tested and detected this odd behavior on beta 9.2.

Do you work for MINIX? I anticipate that will be the MINIX response to this firmware bug.

I don't want to do that because (1) it is incontinent to me and (2) it will be confusing to the next user of the television. That is, (1) if I do not remember to unmute the television (it will late at night and I will be sleepy and drunk), then (2) it will not be obvious to the next user why there is no audio (my wife and she will yell at me when she finally figures out why there is no sound).

I prefer a hot-fix for this firmware bug from MINIX to a work-around.

If the power button didn't work on the X8 would pulling the power plug out of the X8 power socket be an acceptable work-around? If the NEO A2 air mouse "Caps LK" key LED didn't light when the caps lock function is enabled would "just remember" to disable the caps lock function be an acceptable work-around?

I dont work for minix but i do recommend a pair of bluetooth headphones, I have a pair of cheap philips headphones that I use all the time with my X7 when my wife is sleeping (and sometimes when she's not sleeping so I can pretend i don't hear her )

Do you find that A/V sync is messed up when using Bluetooth headsets?

That would be fine for me if MINIX supplies the Bluetooth headphones as a work-around for this issue or as a standard item with the X8-H.

At lease two other users (me and Higgs) as well as MINIX US support can reproduce this bug but MINIX Hong Kong cannot reproduce it and they are the ones who really need to so that they can fix it. It's very discouraging.

I just down graded the FW on my X8-H to beta 8 to resolve another unrelated issue (NEO A2 "Caps LK" key LED not working correctly with beta 9 FW) and I can confirm that audio is directed to both the earphones and HDMI port when earphones are plugged in the X8-H earphone jack with beta 8 FW. When I received my X8-H I believe it had beta 7 FW installed (20140722) and at least most of the time the earphone jack functioned correctly.

I down graded the FW on my X8-H further to beta 7 (20140722) and have found the following about audio and the headphone jack.

    1. Audio is never directed to both the earphones and HDMI port at the same time - that is, audio is either only directed to the headphones or the HDMI port [correct].

    2. When XBMC is started if earphones are not plugged into the earphone jack, then audio is directed to the HDMI port [correct]. If earphones are then plugged into the earphone jack, then audio is directed to the earphones [correct].

    3. When XBMC is started if earphones are plugged into the earphone jack, then audio is directed to the HDMI port [WRONG]. If the earphones are unplugged and re-plugged into the headphone jack, then audio is directed to the earphones [correct].

    4. From within XBMC when different LIVE TV channels are selected and earphones are plugged into the earphone jack and the audio is directed to the earphones, then the audio remains directed to the earphones [correct].

    5. When the YouTube app is started if earphones are not plugged into the earphone jack, then audio is directed only to the HDMI port [correct]. If earphones are then plugged into the earphone jack, then audio is directed to the earphones [correct].

    6. When the YouTube app is started if earphones are plugged into the earphone jack, then audio is directed to the HDMI port [WRONG]. If the earphones are unplugged and re-plugged into the headphone jack, then audio is directed to the earphones [correct].

    7. From within the YouTube app when one video is stopped and another video is started when earphones are plugged into the earphone jack and the audio is directed to the earphones, then the audio is directed to the HDMI port [WRONG]. If the earphones are unplugged and re-plugged into the headphone jack, then audio is directed to the earphones [correct].

I don't think you need to use wording like "denial", is that necessary? Just take it easy and let us look into that, ok?

The email we received was telling a different story - no audio through headphone jack, that's what we tested and confirmed not happening.

It's not a serious issue and we could fix it.

    Just relax, come on guys!!

It's true that the firmware is a beta, bug reports are welcomed. Please just don't flash it if you have no tolerance towards problems!

Thread locked! Please start a new one with proper tone! This post is extremely discouraging to our team members!
