How to: Install Windows 8.1 on the MINIX Neo Z64A (Windows Tutorial)

Discussion in 'NEO Z64A Guides & FAQs' started by Gadget Friendly, Apr 5, 2015.

  1. Sup guys, heres a video tutorial on how to convert your Neo Z64A into a N64W - Make sure before beginning this that you have an actual working Windows 8.1 iso (youll need this to boot the installation from) and a valid product key. Everything else related to process should be covered in the video. Enjoy!

    Nice tutorial! Couple of comments:
    1) Flashing UEFI is simpler with Minix official UEFI files. Just copy them to the root of a USB flash drive (FAT32).
    2) Windows installation can be started directly by selecting from UEFI the bootable USB that has the install file. Don't have to go through the shell.

    What I meant is:
    1) Copy the official UEFI conversion files to the root of a USB that has been prepared just like the one in the tutorial (3:50). Minix uses Intel Flash Tools whereas, Lifeforce (the one in the tutorial) uses AMI flash tool. I found that the Intel one was a little faster.
    2) Instead of going through the EFI shell as mentioned in the tutorial (9:19), just select the USB that has the OS installation. It will start the install process automatically.

Only 1 thing, Nitroteam didn't release any tool to flash Bios, and we prefer the MINIX official way to flash the BIOS too :)

My bad! It is Lifeforce that released the original UEFI conversion files. I will correct my post.

  11. The MINIX bios files are both for windows I tested them and was unable to flash back to android. Could've been updated since the first day but that was my initial experience with them.

I downloaded the file the day it was posted. It had both Android and Windows UEFI files. Android Reflash (reinstall of Android) does take a looong time (20-30 min). I don't use that any more. I just copy over the Macrium Reflect image that I have.
  13. Strange I flashed both bios files like 3 times each actually and every time after when trying to reflash android it ended in an error msg about flashing a 64bit to a 32bit. What was also weird is the naming was backwards e.g. android was windows and windows was windows too.

That is strange. May be, the file was changed at some point of time. This is the MD5 hash for the file that I downloaded - 3E37ECE68F5058F1116257FCE99AB90C

Might be stupid question but can I just download Windows Bing free from Microsoft? or do I need to pay for it?

How to Get Windows 8.1 With Bing
This $0 edition of Windows is only free to system manufacturers. You can’t just go download Windows 8.1 with Bing and install it on your own computer. The cheapest retail version of Windows 8.1 you can buy yourself is still the core edition of Windows 8.1 at $120.

I followed that tutorial a few days ago and installed windows 8.1 pro. Purchased a product key off Ebay for £20 and then upgraded to windows 10. Runs sweet as a nut.

Is it possible to install Windows 7 on Z64A 1st then upgrade to Windows 10?

No you cannot install Windows 7. It doesn't support UEFI boot.
