    Hi All,

I am thinking of purchasing the NEO U9-H but have been told for streaming Live TV, which would be the primary function, this box does not perform as well as others. I wanted to post asking for your experiences with this so that I can get a feel for what the community knows and not just hearsay.

    Thanks in Advance!

Live and recorded TV is one of my primary uses for a media player, using Kodi Krypton.
Where would you like me to start to discourage you from buying a U9 for Interlaced Live TV streaming....

You have not even mentioned how you are going to feed Live TV into the U9 or what software you are going to use to view it. ?

Because I can tell you Android Kodi Krypton on the U9 is not going to give you reliable or high quality deinterlacing results for Live TV.
You will get half motion deinterlacing, or broken hardware decoding when viewing TV due to PVR bugs in Android Kodi Krypton.

You should actually be looking at a AMLogic S905 box like the MINIX U1 and running LibreELEC Kodi Krypton on it if you want ultra reliable high quality Advanced Motion Adaptive deinterlacing for TV use.

Thanks for the reply. You are right, other than mention the software I was using (STB Emulator) in the title I haven't mentioned how I was going feed LiveTV. I was going to use the Ethernet port to connect to an online service. Do you need to know the service provider as well?

I will checkout the MINUX U1

Ahhh missed that App in the thread title.

Some definitions need to be established first:

OTA Live TV & recorded TV (using a TV Antenna) = interlaced TV content that need specialised hardware and Software to "deinterlace" this TV material and output high quality full motion "Progressive" video to displays.

IPTV = usually streams as "Progressive" video requiring no deinterlacing. Progressive video is all the other video that does not involve OTA Live TV and some DVD's.

To muddy the waters, some IPTV streams can also be streamed as Interlaced material.

I've looked at the STB Emulator (Pro) and it uses Android's Exo player, which interfaces into the Mediacodec video decoder on the U9. If any interlaced IPTV content is passed to Mediacodec expect poor picture quality results on the U9 and the U1 as well when running Android and that STB emulator App.

The ultimate question is are the TV streams to be viewed in STB Emulator (Pro) all Progressive or some Interlaced video content ?
How much do you like to gamble ?

If all IPTV to be viewed using the STB App is progressive video content you will be fine.

If Interlaced you need to use Android Kodi Jarvis v16.x / XBMC v16.x for MINIX or LibreELEC Kodi Krypton on a U1 and Kodi's IPTV Addon for the best deinterlacing results.

That some great info, thank you. Can I just use Kodi for both progressive and interlaced TV Streams? I'm not necessarily adamant to using STB, it's just one of the apps that I found that works decently on a tablet.

Dare I ask if you know of a different OEM box that is more suitable for processing both progressive and interlaced TV Streams?

    Please read this again....

The Mediacodec decoder only used in Android Kodi Krypton on the U9 will not produce high quality deinterlaced picture results.

You need to use Amcodec hardware video decoding that then uses AMLogic's Advanced Motion Adaptive deinterlacing.

Amcodec Hardware decoding & deinterlacing is not reliable on the U9, it ends up producing weird color outputs after a while.

Amcodec hardware video decoding (& deinterlacing) is reliable when used with Android Kodi Jarvis v16.x / XBMC v16.x for MINIX or LibreELEC Kodi Krypton on a U1 (S905)

Personally if its only Kodi Krypton you need to use, avoid Android all together and simply use LibreELEC Kodi Krypton on a AMLogic S905 / S905X box. You will have far less Kodi headaches then and everything will "just work"

BTW: The U1 can Dual boot - LibreELEC Kodi Krypton running entirely from an external microSDHC card, then you still have Android you can boot to from internal storage.
It really is the way to go. (y)

Thanks again for a very informative post.

I canceled my U9 and my U1 is arriving today and I will start with LiveTV streaming with Android Kodi Jarvis v16.x / XBMC v16.x for MINIX and then venture into dual-booting with LibreELEC Kodi Krypton which I am very intrigued about. I'll search the forums on how to dual-boot but if there is a better resource for that info that you know of I would be very grateful if you could point me to it.

    All the best!

Got my U1 and so far LiveTV streaming with Android XBMC v16.x for MINIX is fantastic. A couple glitches here and there where the video seems to be in fast forward but the audio is normal but this appears to be rare. Will try dual boot for fun sometime soon. Thanks for the recommendation!
