It's a Netflix problem, they aren't streaming in 1080p for all devices.

To my knowledge, they have limited it to devices which they trust with DRM support. So custom ROMs and TV boxes like Minix with a relatively small user base will nt be included on their "pass" list for HD streaming.

Oké maybe a custom made app of netflix could be an option for this... even popcorn time does not support 5.1 sound in his app

We have both DRM and HDCP on the box, it's not the reason that they don't allow 1080p to run on our device.

    Oh, my bad.

Anyone in contact with Netflix from your end? Maybe a statement from themselves would be good.

WTH!? Then it's even more strange that it doesn't work!! >=/ Makes me kind of furious with Netflix :(

The reason is Netflix itself. Netflix will have to allow it on their own app. Only they can make this happen, and only they can answer why.
Minix has done as much as it possibly can on that issue.

I would't hold my breath waiting for 1080p from Netflix on these boxes. I doubt if it is a Netflix decision, the content owers require secure approved devices with locked down boatloaders and it is a contractual obligation is my guess. There is no 1080p with DTS from Netflix so Minix boxes are on equal footing with all others in that reqard.

Acording to customer support on netflix this box should work with 1080p. Bet that guy must be new...

Thanks for waiting, ! So I was checking this with my team about the Minix X8-h Plus and the great news is that we don't have any restrictions on the quality! The Device is capable for 1080p on the netflix app, since it runs on Android! So no problem there. :)

Thats just one of the 4 times he was 100% certain that there was NO restrictions from their end...

Just out of curiosity... would it make a difference to change the build prop to have netflix think you are another device (say Nexus 9 - provided this is capable in having HD output)?

    Would that solve something?

Yeah... I Have had the very same reply "No, there is no restrictions. It should work just fine with the Netflix App". I have also receieved the reply that they will check to see what is wrong on their side and do their darndest to make it work. We'll see what happens with that. I am, unfortunately, slowly losing hope that this will be fixed anytime in the near future...

Sorry, but I have asked this question as well. Several attempts has been made, both by the tech-people at Minix and by third parties and no luck what so ever :( Doesn't look good here either I'm affraid!

They need to protect their own precious child Roku by limiting other devices.
    Just my 2 cents.

MINIX has all needed requirements ( DRM/HDCP etc ) but now the device must be approved by netflix for all i know. it is a matter of sending 1080p to our devices wich netflix does not.

After 2010, Netflix has no stake in Roku. Roku is a privately held company backed by investors - Menlo Ventures, GlobeSpan Capital Partners, Fox Networks Group, Luminari Capital, BrightSign, Venrock, BSkyB. It is a fact that Roku CEO was the head of Griffin project at Netflix. In 2002, he founded Roku as his sixth company (Roku mean six in Japanese). If Netflix had vested interests in Roku, why would Netflix HD be available on millions of devices such as:
HDTVs: Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Vizio, Sharp, Toshiba, Sanyo, Hisense, TCL
Blu-ray players: Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Sharp, Toshiba, Philips, Maganox, Oppo
    Game consoles: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360
Set Top Boxes: Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Tivo, Vizio, LG, Sony
Home Theater Systems: Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, LG
Phones/Tablets: iPad, Amazon Kindle Fire, Fire TV, Nook, some Windows Phone, several Android Phones/tablets

On Android OS, Netflix HD is enabled only on Google certified devices that have been tested to conform to level 1 Widevine DRM and is factory provisioned.

Yes, do we know whether that is a result of Netflix or content owners? I suspect Netflix is bound by contracts and Android is a scary operating system to owners of content. My locked down, DRM compliant four year old Sony NSZ-GT1 Google TV quickly ramps up to 5800kbps and 1920x1080 while the Minix X8-H sitting right beside hit hits 1750kbps and 720x480 and goes no higher. I feel sure Netflix would be happy to offer 1080p to existingMinix boxes if that was acceptable to the companies owing the content.

The factors that make these boxes attractive to the hobbyist community are the same factors that make these boxes unusable for the mainstream streaming services, it isn't just Netflix, as far as I know HBO GO, Vudu, Hulu Plus and all of the others have severe limitations or don't work period.

Correct. The restrictions are mostly due to contractual obligations that Netflix has to content providers (who do not want to lose revenue from antiquated business models). Yes, Vudu and Hulu Plus also do not have HD playback on Android OS. Many many months ago, @MINIX - Ken had mentioned something about having Vudu pre-installed on X8. Don't know what is the current status of that.
