No sound after System Update today

Hi, big fan of Minix, and never had any problems until today when I did an FOTA update to the latest version of software for my Minix neo x8-h.
Everything went fine as always but now have no sound. My build number says: KOT 49H.20150708 release-keys, Android 4.4.2, Kernel version 3.10.33
I have tried everything I can think of to correct the problem from factory resets, connecting the box to 3 different TVs in the house, changing all audio settings, etc.,. Interestingly I can get sound via headphones through the headphone port but nothing through a TV. I connect the box to the TV via an HDMI cable (and have tried using a different cable as well).
The fact that everyting worked perfectly until I did the update suggests to me (the complete novice in all this!) that it's not a hardware problem - but if it's not a hardware problem I am surprised that others are not having similar problems with the update!

Very grateful for your help please. Thank you!
    Jo

You can't have sound from headphone port and TV speakers simultaneously. Unplug headphones.

Thanks Endrjupl for the response. I have obviously not explained things well. I have no sound at all from the TV (or soundbar) but if I plug some earphones into the box I can hear sound through the headphones (only) - never through the TV speakers as before. I cannot get any sound out of any of the televisions I have tried. I plugged headphones into the box purely as an experiment to see if I could get any sound from the box - with or without headphones plugged in I get no sound at all from the TV.

That's odd. Can you try flashing the latest firmware using flash tool?

I was just writing an update with the latest with the situation as your message came in :)
I first tried (and apologies if my terminology is not correct) reinstalling the latest software via the USB port on the box and still no sound.
Then I tried installing the previous version of firmware (which had been working fine) via the USB on the box but after several attempts I could not get the box to accept the older version as it kept telling me a newer version of firmware was available.

So, then I tried the flashing the firmware via PC.
First I tried using the latest version, all loaded fine - but again NO sound.
Then I tried installing the previous version of firware via the PC and it accepted the software and sound works again :)
To the complete novice it looks like it must be a bug in the new software but then again why aren't other people having similar problems?

That's really odd mate, if it was a common bug people would eat us alive ;) What's your TV make and model?

    Hi,
Well as I said in my first post on this I tried it on the 3 TVs in the house - a Sony, a Toshiba and a Hisense. I can give you the TV model numbers if it will help, but I don't think that it can be a problem with all 3 TVs.
I would have to be very unlucky to have the only 3 TVs with this problem (and no one else in the World uses these TVs with Minix).......
I think I tried everything from changing TVs, cables, settings etc., the only thing that worked was re-installing the older version of firmware.

Oh, I missed that you tried 3 TV's. @Higgs @Villa do you have any ideas on this one?

This is weird. There can't be anything wrong with the firmware or there would be a lot more complaints.
Have you tried another FOTA update after flashing the previous firmware to see if the problem re-occurs.
The only thing I can think of is that the box must somehow 'think' that there is something plugged into the 3.5mm audio jack, thus cancelling the audio to the hdmi in the latest firmware. Maybe some kind of bad connection?

I thought something similar. There was sound through the headphone jack into the headphones. I tried re- inserting the headphones several times incase there was a problem with the box thinking headphones were plugged in when they were'nt.
(Without headphones plugged in) I tried every comination of HDMI cable and/or SPDIF cable into the TVs (and also tried into a Soundbar as well (Phillips) - no sound.
It can't be a bad connection as surely then why when just flashing from a PC does the new firmware not work, and without touching the box, immediately the old firmware works instantly?

The old firmware had a 'bug' which allowed simultaneous sound from both the headphone jack and hdmi, so that would explain why just flashing the old firmware works.

Interesting, and thanks for all the help!
Sounds like you're on the right lines. So for some reason the box thinks that headphones are permanently plugged in whatever I do.
So if the headphone socket itself works fine and sound is great from it - whichever version of firmware I have installed - then you still think it could be a hardware issue?

given what you've tried its got to be something embarrassingly simple...
do a double check that you have the sound enabled and turned up on both the minix remote and on the TV ,
and that you have manually set up the correct sound settings ( dont rely on "auto" settings ) in minix settings
you have correct sound settings in whatever application you are using
    cables are pushed firmly in

yes it does seem very strange that when you flash your older firmware it all works...as others have said if it was 006A firmware the forum would be flooded, and I for one have no such issues with 006A firmware

only other thing is as @Higgs mentioned that somehow the minix still thinks it has headphones connected...is it possible this has got damaged in some way ?

hope you get it sorted :)

Thanks. Believe me I have checked and checked, and tried and tried, every single possible thing over the last 2 days (along with the help of my son who is back from Uni.). It has been driving me up the wall.
It's simply a fact that everything works fine with old version of firmware. Do nothing, change nothing, touch nothing just stay in front of the PC and change to the new version and sound stops working. Stay seated and do the reverse and sound works again.
As far as box being damaged as a possibility; the answer is no as it sits in the same spot as always and never gets touched.

As for me I have the box working now with sound as long as I keep with the previous version of firmware. I am still amazed that no one else has had a similar problem so must conclude that the box has always had something wrong with it internally, and it is just this change in firmware that has shown brought it to light. What I suppose this does mean for the future though is that any problem/damage to the headphone hardware or software now becomes even more important as it now disables all other sound options.
Since having this problem I have obviously been reading through the forums trying to find answers and noticed some people prefer (or are have hearing problems) having sound to external sources whilst the headphones are in use. Would there be a way in a future release to make this perhaps an option in settings? It would have helped me, and maybe others in the future with a similar problem or desire. I realise it's more work and complication for you guys who do all the hard work so I will say no more ;)
    Thanks

MINIX Ken posted in one of the threads that they're looking into the possibility of making an ON/OFF switch for simultaneous audio from both hdmi&jack. I wonder if that's the cause in your case.

    Jo8862 New Member

Well I think you guys have correctly identified the area where the problem lies, but what's causing it in my case I still have no idea.

I think an ON/OFF switch may well have solved my problem.
I presume now that because of my problem I must wait to see if there is an update, which includes such an option in it, before updating my firmware?

Thanks again for all your help, and for all responding so quickly - Members, Moderators and even Super Moderators!!!!!! Great stuff!

Thanks WeK05, just tried the app on previous version of firmware (the one that works fine) and at first play it seems to work. I switch to just headphones and I get just headphones, I switch to just HDMI and I get sound just through HDMI. So that all looks good......
But, I haven't tried it yet on the new firmware that caused sound loss problem, and also it requires payment for using the app for more than 2 days.
As I said before I think you guys are spot on in highlighting the source of the problem. And I can't believe I an the only one who is going to encounter the same issue - and still can't see what is wrong with my box that is not wrong with everybody else's! :(
    Thanks

    My thoughts on the matter!

Normally inside an audio jack socket there exists a normally closed switch, this means you will get sound output via TV/HDMI. When this switch is broken by inserting a jack plug, sound output is cut to the TV/HDMI and sound is directed via the jack to your headphones. If this switch does not close when you pull out the jack plug then there will be no sound output to TV/HDMI.

    Now, as @Higgs pointed out...
The old firmware had a 'bug' which allowed simultaneous sound from both the headphone jack and hdmi, so that would explain why just flashing the old firmware works.
...this would indicate that the firmware is not looking at the state of the switch, whether the headphones are plugged in or not.

With the new firmware, it would appear that it is looking at the state of the switch. If it is closed, sound output via TV/HDMI. If it is open, sound output via headphones only.

It is certainly possible that it is a headphones jack problem as @Villa has suggested. I have read about similar problem with iPhone's jack. You could try one of these methods that seem to have fixed the problem for some:
    1) Blow compressed air into the jack.
    2) Clean the jack with a Q-tips or something similar.
    3) Plug and unplug the headphones quickly couple of times.
